There are many things that make up a champion. I believe one of them is the ability to totally commit.
I love the movie “The Verdict” with Paul Newman. Newman is a down and out lawyer who was once worked at a top tier law firm. His former partner, played by Jack Warden, does him a favor and gives him a case to try. I won’t go in to all of the details, but suffice it to say that it is a very difficult case that turns into a near impossible case to win.
At the absolute lowest point in the trial, Paul Newman is being begged by everyone to throw in the towel, to give up. But Newman had hit his pivotal moment, his Crossing of the Rubicon, his point of no return.
And, as if in a trance, Newman begins to mutter, “There are no other cases; this is the case. There are no other cases; this is the case.”
I love that! Newman is digging in and saying that he will not quit and move on to the next thing. This is it! I have said similar phrases over the years when I need to fully commit. “There are no other deals, this is the deal.” Or “There are no other teams, this is the team.” It has helped me to focus and channel my energies.
An old baseball coach told me “When times get tough don’t ‘hang in there’. If you ‘hang in there’ people can slap you around. You need to ‘dig in there!’
Making a promise to others and to you is a powerful motivator. The power of commitment can help fuel your success!
